Yoga is the perfect remedy for life in our modern world.
There is a magical quality about yoga that makes it different from western ‘workouts' - cultivating not just physical health - but awareness, clarity, calm + overall well-being. Yoga helps us live our lives to the fullest.

The ancient tradition of Yoga, which translates to union or harmony, is both a philosophy and a way of life that offers us the opportunity to deepen our self-awareness through physical movement, breathing and meditation. The result is a healthy body and a calm and clear mind.

The practice of yoga can lead to physical benefits such as improved cardiovascular functioning, stronger muscles and bones and increased flexibility. The benefits to the mind and soul are endless – the experience of quieting your mind and connecting with your breath leads to a deeper sense of well-being and balance.

The eight limbs (Pantanjali 200 BC) of Yoga, lead the student on an journey of human potential, and to the highest state of realisation (Samadhi). The eight limbs consist of:
1. Yama: codes of restraint, abstinence
2. Niyama: observances, self-training
3. Asana: poses to build health + self-awareness + prepare for meditation
4. Pranayama: breathing, expansion of breath + prana
5. Pratyahara: withdrawal of the senses
6. Dharana: concentration
7. Dhyana: meditation
8. Samadhi: deep absorption, self realisation

They address the cultivation of awareness in everything from ethical conduct to meditation. The third branch of this system, asana - also known as Hatha Yoga, focuses on the strengthening and purification of the body. An asana practice integrates the breath and the body into a cohesive whole.

Hatha Yoga refers to the physical aspect of Yoga, of which there are many styles, out of which evolve more styles. Most styles of yoga taught are some form and variation of Hatha Yoga. The differences are usually about emphasis, such as focusing on strict alignment of the body, coordination of breath and movement, holding the postures, or the flow from one posture to another. The word Hatha = HA ~ Sun, THA ~ Moon.
